The leaves are harvested from a small, bushy evergreen tree which is native to Sri Lanka and southern India. However, it has been cultivated to grow in Vietnam, Indonesia, Brazil, and Egypt as well. Indeed, cinnamon has been claimed to be one of the oldest spices that man has used. There is a record of use in Egypt for embalming and is mentioned in the Bible. Since early times cinnamon has been used both as a beverage flavoring and medicine. Cinnamon has held its place in history as being so valuable that it was placed above gold.
